Do you currently have backyard space that seems to go under-used and is just not very exciting? Do you peer out the windows to your yard and feel less than inspired? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, then there’s a good chance your yard is in need of a serious makeover. When it comes to designing the ultimate backyard, you can really go all out, with both ideas and budget. For those not quite prepared to go big or go home, here are three tips that could get you started and provide an instant makeover with fabulous results.
Install a Fence
Perhaps a fence wasn’t something you originally planned to do in your yard, but as time has passed you’ve started to give it second thought and realized you do indeed need a fence.
Installing a fence provides all kinds of benefits such as:
- Giving you privacy
- It adds a touch of elegance and style to a yard
- It increases the level of security in your yard and home
- It’s excellent if you have a dog and/or kids who play outside
- It helps to protect your landscaping and garden
- It adds value to a home
- It makes it very clear where the property lines are
Keep in mind there are different styles, heights, and materials to use for fencing, so you’ve got lots of options to choose from.
Do a Little Gardening
There’s no reason you need to go all out and plant gardens throughout your entire yard space, but even one well-maintained and properly planned out garden can make a massive difference. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and choose a more natural and organic shape to the garden with curved lines, as this can make the backyard feel much more interesting and unique.
As for what to plant, you want to be sure you’re choosing items that will work well in your specific soil conditions and sun/shade conditions. You can choose a variety of perennials and annuals, bright pops of color, and standard green.
If you’re new to gardening, you can start small with a modest sized garden bed and then plan to expand it and add to it each year moving forward. This allows you to gradually ease into gardening, learning as you go.
Add Decking or a Patio
One of the best things about having backyard space is that added area you can use for entertaining and relaxing in. With that said, it’s ideal to have a dedicated seating area, which can be defined with a deck or patio space.
The first thing you’ll want to think about is how big you want to go with the deck or patio. Generally, the experts agree that you should go as big as the space and budget allows, as you’ll always find a way to use all that area. As for materials, some of the most common ones are wood (for decking), natural stone, bricks, and concrete slabs.
A good tip is to spend a little time looking for inspiration online, in magazines, and even driving around your town/city at ideas you like and don’t like.
Choose One or Choose Them All
So, whether you just pick one project off the list or all of them, you’re sure to create a more welcoming backyard space.
