San Francisco is a spectacular peninsula surrounded by water on three sides which is the second most densely populated cities in United States. One thing that makes this place America’s favorite is its impressive backdrop. The steep hills, breathtaking Golden gate bridge, bay and turquoise waters make it a paradise on earth. On a personal note, I have always wished to have a house in San Francisco where I can relax after my hectic office schedules and Potrero House reminds me of my dream home. Cary Bernstein has dedicated a lot of time and her creative ideas to work on this project and turn the old cottage style design into a comfortable yet gorgeous structural plan.
The owners of Potrero House actually purchased an old cottage, which they wanted to turn into a comfortable living space. The only idea was to create a spacious dwelling which is functional, comfy and impressive, at the same time. Old cottage was originally built in 1904 and was more than 100 years old. The old construction resided on a triple wide lot, which took designer, Cary Bernstein to complete the project in two phases. The renovation part was initiated with exterior, interior and landscape improvements followed by a third floor addition.
Over the years, the construction had suffered numerous haphazard additions and the owner wanted to build up a modern architecture along with preserving the traditional touch and the mature gardens. Designer has added quirky characteristics to the original construction by adopting an open interior plan that beautifully connects to the outdoors and the use of contemporary materials make it look very elegant. The third floor expansion and addition of sustainable materials helped the overall plan to decrease the energy consumption.
The use of glass in the huge voids not only keeps a transparency with the green environment, but also brightens up the interior. The wooden flooring with white interiors gives a very cozy feel to the inner backdrop and makes the space look livelier. Spacious kitchen includes a kitchen island to maximize the storage space even more. The patio has been wisely used to have a sitting in the exteriors, where family can enjoy a get together with friends and can entertain them. The expansion of third floor also gives enough space to the couple and their three kids to spend some quality time.
