When planning the type of window treatments you want in your home, there are several factors that must be taken into account. The window type, location in the home, and personal preferences are all elements that need to be considered. Naturally it helps to have a good idea of the window blinds available.

Vertical Blinds

One of the most popular types of window blinds on the market today is vertical blinds. This type of window treatment is often used on sliding doors and very large windows. In most cases, these blinds are easy to use with cords that raise and lower the blinds as desired.

They are made of a wide variety of materials, including the slat versions with plastic, aluminum, real wood, and the faux version. The non-slatted types are typically made of heavy plastic or fabric. Vertical blinds are very good for reducing outdoor light and saving energy, and come in a huge selection of design options. However, for people looking for a unique look, these blinds are a bit on the conventional side.

Venetian Blinds

Also high on the popularity list is Venetian blinds. These blinds are incredibly distinctive and most often made from wood or faux wood. Metal and plastic are often used as well. Venetian blinds are made from slats connected to one another with a cord or strip of fabric, and are ideal for use in the bathroom or kitchen.

They are made to be opened by rotating the slats a full 180 degrees, or anywhere in between. This feature not only makes them easy to use, but is also very easy to clean. The only real drawback to this type of blind is breakage. Depending on the material used in construction, Venetian blinds are prone to slat breakage, especially in high traffic areas or around pets or small children who may be harder on the blinds than necessary.

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are also a good option. These blinds are typically made from plastic and feature a unique folded or rolled appearance when raised. Available in large selection of colors and prints, they are often used in home office spaces due to their very good light blocking ability. Another version of the roller blinds, Roman blinds are usually made from fabric and make an excellent addition to bedroom decor. Though versatile and stylish, roller and Roman blinds can be a challenge to clean.
